SCOTTISH CRIME & DRUG ENFORCEMENT AGENCY (SCDEA)

Mr Gordon Meldrum is now in his 25th year as a police officer, having joined Strathclyde Police in 1985.  During his service, he has worked in Glasgow, Renfrewshire, Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire - spending time in uniform, the CID and Special Branch.

In 1997, he was appointed Head of the Scottish Office of the National Criminal Intelligence Service, a post that he held for three years.  In 2000, Mr Meldrum was seconded as Project Team Leader for the Scottish Drug Enforcement Agency (SDEA) and remained with the SDEA for a further two years as Deputy Head of Intelligence.  On promotion to Superintendent in December 2001, Mr Meldrum returned to Strathclyde Police and was appointed Sub Divisional Officer for Paisley.

In 2003/2004, Mr Meldrum undertook a twelve month Fellowship Programme with the Leadership Development Institute of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Although based primarily at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Mr Meldrum also spent time in many other States in America, as well as two months with the Australian Institute of Police Management in New South Wales.  On return to the UK, Mr Meldrum was appointed Deputy Head of the Operational Support Division within Strathclyde Police, which is responsible for Support Services, Emergencies Planning, Road Policing and Force Communications.  In April 2005, following his promotion to Chief Superintendent, Mr Meldrum was appointed Divisional Commander of Glasgow North and East Dunbartonshire. 

Mr Meldrum has also served as Co-ordinator of the Scottish Police Information and Co-ordination Centre (SPICC) on two separate occasions; in 2003, for the Military Campaign in Iraq, then again in May 2005 to support the Scottish Police Service operation for the G8 Summit at Gleneagles.

On 8 June 2006, Mr Meldrum was appointed Assistant Chief Constable, Deputy Director General of the SCDEA and in late 2006 he successfully completed the Strategic Command Course.  

In 2008, Mr Meldrum embarked on a Personal Development/Leadership programme: BT Vital Vision – “an opportunity to think laterally and expand one’s own vision, while ultimately helping shape the future of the public sector.”  Joining other high profile professionals from government, the police service, local authorities and NHS, he ventured on a programme of intense study, culminating in residential exercises at both Harvard and Berkeley Universities, USA.  Mr Meldrum successfully graduated from the BT Vital Vision programme in San Francisco, USA, in October 2008.

Mr Meldrum was appointed Deputy Chief Constable, Director General, of the SCDEA on 1 January 2008.
